Hi,

I attended Mass at Our Lady & St.Cadoc, Kidwelly on Sunday December 27th with my youngest daughter, aged 5, as we were staying in BP over the weekend. It was a thoroughly enjoyable & uplifting experience. Thank you Fr. Thomas and congregation. Oops, and organist!

I've been back & fore to BP for over 20 years but never before attended Mass in the area.

We live in the huge city centre St. Mary's parish in Newport but my home parish is St Michael (the Archangel) in the Pill (Pillgwenlly) docks area of Newport. We attend St. Mary's as my little one is in school at said Primary and, at 9.30 Sunday Mass, they have a "chldren's liturgy". Between 20 & 50 youngsters participate. My heart, however, will always belong to "St. Mike's".

Both churches, the oldest in Newport (St Mary's the older), are huge 19th century buildings and were established by the Rosminians. About 3 years ago the Rosminians pulled out of the west side of Newport (St Mary's a couple of years before St. Mike's), due to falling numbers within the order, retaining only St. Patricks on the east of the river Usk. The Arcdiocese of Cardiff combined all 6 parishes in the west of Newport into a single parish, "All Saints", but all 6 church buildings retain their original name and still function, albeit with reduced services.

What also changed was how Mass was conducted. We sing everything that's singable in english! I've nothing against this and I still love (and know) the sung latin Mass, but it was nice to say a "Glory to God ........", respond to (rather than sing) a responsorial psalm and welcome the gospel with a spoken acclamation rather than a single word, but wonderfuly sung, Hosanna! I haven't heard the traditional intercession "Lord, graciously hear us" for 3 years! Last Sunday's was simple, "Lord, come to our help", but Christmas Day's was about 12 words long with no printed reference, very difficult to pick up for the youngsters and oldies (me!). It certainly makes Mass interesting! How many different tunes can a mystery of faith proclomation be sung to? I don't know, I'm still learning.

This may sound like a moan but it isn't really, just a long winded explanation of some of the reasons why I enjoyed Mass in your company so much yesterday.

Vive la difference!

I look forward to joining you for Mass many times in the future.

Gerard.
